The Courts Matter to Maine Coalition released the following statement regarding the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court:

"Our coalition believes that the judiciary should be fair, just, independent, qualified and representative of our communities. With her stellar background and impressive qualifications, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson would be an excellent addition to the Supreme Court.

“She is currently a judge on our nation's second highest court and has more years of experience as a trial court judge than any sitting Supreme Court justice. If confirmed, she would be only the second sitting justice with experience at all levels of the federal court system.

“Judge Jackson makes history as the first Black woman and as the first former public defender to be nominated, bringing with her a much-needed critical perspective only gained through lived experience. Our coalition celebrates this nomination and will continue our work uplift the importance of diversity of thought and experience across our judiciary.”

The nonpartisan Courts Matter to Maine Coalition exists to ensure that Mainers understand the powerful effect of the Judiciary on their daily lives, and that the Judiciary reflects the diverse backgrounds and lived experiences of the people it serves. It is convened by the Maine Women’s Lobby.
