We turned out the care vote!

THANK YOU!

We focused our energy this session on getting out the care vote.

Care work is work, and is the invisible force that drives our economy.

It is also so undervalued that it's a key contributor to gender inequity. We are proud of our role in turning out the care vote, which included:

  • Creation of a new voter education page, mainewomen.org/carevote

  • Over 700 hand-written postcards sent to key swing communities

  • Over 10,000 mailers to voters who care about care... but who might have needed a nudge to vote

  • Gaining 51,000 signatures on election day to get Paid Family and Medical Leave on the ballot

  • Knocking on over 200 doors in rural Lincoln County

  • Engaging with Mainers 36,000 times over social media

  • Spicing up Tik-Tok with our awesome videos here.

We also celebrated the Fall of the Patriarchy, convened rural teams in Aroostook, Hancock, and Lincoln Counties, and supported statewide training on the best way to connect and engage with voters in our Election Action Institute.

In Maine, not only did we have incredible voter turnout, but we also had historic wins! We elected Jill Duson, who will be the first Black woman to serve in the Maine State Senate. In the Maine State House of Representatives, we gained Representatives-Elect Deqa Dhalac and Mana Abdi, two Somalian-American women, in addition to the first gender-diverse Muslim American Representative-Elect, our very own teammate Ambureen Rana! In the coming weeks, Ambureen's role will be changing & we promise to keep you posted!

In addition to our wins here in Maine, voters in California, Kentucky, Michigan and Vermont turned out in favor of abortion rights in Tuesday’s midterms. All five reproductive justice ballot initiatives in the United States won!

Now we're ready to take a deep breath, relax... and then gear up for the Legislative session in a few short weeks!

In solidarity,

The Maine Women’s Lobby team
