Time and again, Mainers have stood against bills aimed at restricting our right to safe, legal abortion. And we need to stand against another dangerous bill tomorrow: LD 327. This bill is part of a national effort to pass so-called personhood legislation that would grant a fetus legal rights to “heirs and an estate”. The purpose is to create confusion in Maine law, which already has clear protections for pregnant women, in order to chip away at abortion rights.
Join us at the public hearing tomorrow, Tuesday, May 16th at 1:00 PM in the Judiciary Committee.
LD 327 would open the door to wrongful death lawsuits against abortion providers performing a legal medical procedure. It’s nearly identical to a bill introduced in 2013 as part of a package of bills to restrict access to safe and legal abortion. We defeated it then and we need to stand together to defeat it now.
If you are able to attend the public hearing tomorrow, please let Victoria know by contacting her at firstname.lastname@example.org or 207-622-0851 x5.
Let’s make sure our legislators know that LD 327 is an unnecessary and dangerous bill that is aimed at making it harder for women to access abortion care in Maine.
