The Linda Smith Dyer Fellowship
The purpose of the Linda Smith Dyer Fellowship is to support an internship by a Law Student from the University of Maine School of Law to work at the Maine Women's Policy Center on public policy initiatives and projects relating to Maine women and girls.
Linda Smith Dyer (1948-2001) Linda Smith Dyer was one of the original founders of the Maine Women's Lobby in 1978, an organization devoted to public policy issues relating to Maine women and girls. The Maine Women's Lobby and the Maine Women's Policy Center pursue research and analysis on that affect women in four broad areas: economic justice; health care including reproductive rights; freedom from violence; and civil rights.
Linda was a model for Maine girls and women in her devotion to the public interest, skill in navigating public policy, and sheer scope of intellectual sparkle. Linda's pioneering work has been recognized by a wide variety of Maine organizations. In March 2001, Linda was inducted into the Maine Women's Hall of Fame and she received the Sarah Orne Jewett award (posthumously) from the Maine Women's Fund in October, shortly after her untimely death as a result of cancer. Linda graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1980 and served as president of the Maine State Bar Association in 1998.
The Linda Smith Dyer Fellowship will allow the continuation of Linda's strong example of public policy and public interest work by law students at her alma mater. The Linda Smith Dyer Fellowship started funding University of Maine Law School interns in 2002. Our fellows have completed publications and research projects on issues including domestic violence prevention statutes and medical and family leave.
