12th Annual Girls' Day at the State House a Huge Success!

On March 27, 2008, girls were in the majority at the State House.  That’s because the Maine Women’s Policy Center’s 12th annual Girls’ Day at the State House brought 103 girls from across Maine together with more than 60 volunteers, lobbyists, and legislators for a day of learning, leadership, and exploration.

The event, organized by the Maine Women’s Policy Center, sponsored by Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation, George A. Ramlose Foundation, Margaret Chase Smith Library, Verizon, and a generous anonymous sponsor, gave a diverse group of girls the opportunity to learn how they can have an impact in the policymaking process.  Held each year to commemorate Women’s History Month, Girls’ Day at the State House teaches girls about the legislative process and the important role women play in shaping public policy.

Women’s Leadership Action Coalition

When the need for a unified - and amplified - voice for women in Maine was recognized, a coalition of progressive groups formed a network to strengthen our common goal: equality for all Maine citizens.  Convened and staffed by the Maine Women’s Policy Center, WLAC brings together over 20 organizations working toward improving the social, economic, and political status of women and their families.  WLAC provides a formal venue for women’s groups from across the state to network, strategize, share expertise, and discuss current and pending policies relevant to their interests. Working together, WLAC members can build a common voice for a policy agenda that meets the needs of Maine women and girls.
